Artist's Comments

First of two long-exposure nighttime shots of Myrtle Beach's main strip, taken from the 15th floor of the Tropical Winds hotel. The horizon wasn't quite what I wanted, and after rotating, I couldn't find a crop that I liked, so I decided to leave the print uncropped. I think it actually adds to the image.

I'm not that good of a photographer so I can't critique but I like the pic. I tried something like this from my bedroom window cuz I live in a big city but it turned out with a lot of noise.

I'm glad you like the pic. I've tried shots like this before with a point and shoot, and they never worked... partly because they just didn't have a long-exposure mode, and I could never get quite what I wanted. I was quite pleasantly surprised myself at the relatively low amount of noise. Checking out the EXIF, it even shot at ISO 100, which really surprises me (I figured it would push it at least to ISO 200). The second shot ([link]) has a decent amount of noise that's been smoothed out on here, but the original image itself wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, I accidentally oversharpened it in the deviation, attempting to get a certain look out of the lights and then had to resmooth the image.

I don't know whether to attribute the low noise to the Leica optics, the Venus II engine, or the sensor itself, but whatever did it, I'm quite impressed with the performance of my little Lumix. :-)

I tried a long shutter speed outside of my bedroom window. Your photo inspired me but I havent had the nerve to look at it yet. I have a tripod but since I am learning about photography my photos arent coming out the way I want them, yet.

I'm flattered that my work has inspired you (or anyone for that matter)! Keep at it and eventually you'll get something you like. But be sure that you don't try to reproduce the effect I ended up with here. Chances are good that you won't be able to (at least to your satisfaction). For that matter, I probably couldn't reproduce the shot to my own satisfaction. Your efforts will be much more fulfilling if you let your work guide itself to some end result that you like.

Good luck to you, dc. You'll get it.

Thanks! Me too, although until I got the Lumix, I couldn't get the exposure length I wanted. The closest I could get before that was low-light evening shots (like Evening Voyage, which you've seen).

Have I mentioned I love my Lumix? :-)
